2015 WPO Three tables

Following just over five hours of Day 2 play, the 132-player restart is down to the final 27 players and freshly redrawn to three tables.

Here’s a look at some of the notable stacks still in contention:

  • Tom Nguyen – 2,450,000
  • Mike Laake – 1,800
  • Ron Puleo – 1,150,000
  • Michael Cohen – 510,000
  • Jesse Fulmer – 335,000
  • Ryan Carter – 350,000
  • Maroun Akiki – 175,000

All remaining players have locked up $1,734 with the winner pocketing $75,718 and a $1,650 WPO Championship seat.

Event 7: Castles for Mike Laake

Level 20: 8,000/16,000/2,000 Ante

Mike Laake (Punta Gorda, FL)

Seminole Hard Rock Poker ambassador Mike Laake has been on a tear since bursting the bubble about three hours ago. Laake now holds 1,700,000 chips and is second only to chip leader Tom Nguyen. Nguyen is the only player whose stack is greater than 2,000,000.

The clock reads 33 players remaining.

Event 7: Puleo Busts Marczynski in Aces vs. Aces Battle

$560 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 19: 6,000/12,000/2,000 Ante

Ron Puleo and Jenny Marczynski got the last of Marczynski’s stack in the middle in what seemed to be a friendly, harmless aces versus aces battle. Puleo held AsAc and was matched against the AhAd of Marczynski.

All was well on a QsJd9s flop.

A Ks turn brought a third spade and improved Puleo to a flush draw. Honestly, though. He couldn’t hit a flush in this spot, could he?

Sure enough. The 5s reared its ugly head on the river and the table let out a collective groan.

“In the worst way,” Puleo empathized giving Marczynski hug.

Marczynski left the tables stunned. She busted 40th earning $1,388. Puleo now holds 900,000 chips.

Event 7: Start-of-Day Chip Leader Relegated to One Move

$560 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 19: 6,000/12,000/2,000 Ante

After his late arrival, things haven’t gone the way of the start-of-day chip leader Chris Mitchell. With under 100,000 chips and less than 10 big blinds, he’s relegated to one move.

He recently open shoved from middle position for about 80,000. Mitchel watched as player after player mucked before it got to the big blind. He folded as well. Mitchell faded a call and got to live another hand here on Day 2.

We’ll be sure to keep an eye on the previous chip leader as he tries to build a stack back up.

As of now, the clock reads 42 players remaining. They’ve all locked up $1,388.

Event 7: Austin Buchanan Eliminated 57th ($1,072)

$560 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 18: 5,000/10,000/1,000 Ante

Florida pro Austin Buchanan’s run at a Winter Poker Open title has come to an end. Buchanan, who owns more than $425,000 in tournament earnings, was in the big blind and faced a button raise to 23,000. Buchanan called and they saw a flop of QhTd3c. Buchanan checked and the button bet what appeared to be 35,000. Buchanan check-raised all in and the button didn’t waste anytime calling. The button held KhQs and was comfortably ahead of Buchanan’s JhTc. The board completed blanks and Buchanan gathered his things.

He busted 57th earning $1,072.

Event 7: Stanechewski Ends Moser’s Day

Victoria (Jubb) Moser began the day with a top ten chip stack but she was unable to ride it further than a min-cash. Nothing went well for her since she sent an opponent out at the start of the day and ran into a big coin flip with Paul Stanechewski.

All the chips were in the middle preflop and their stacks were very close. Stanechewski was ahead with JhJc against Moser’s AdKc and nothing changed as the board ran Qd9h2hQh2c.

It was a tough end to her day while Stanechewski moved over 400,000.

Mike Laake’s pocket eights burst the Event 7 money bubble.

Seminole Hard Rock Poker ambassador Mike Laake — who also happens to be seated next to Tampa ambassador Wally Maddah — did the dirty work on the Event 7 money bubble. A few hands after he and another player chopped a pot that saw a third player in the hand hit the rail, Laake peeked down at 8h8d. Another player at the table got the last of his 202,000 chips in with AxKx and it was a race.

The board ran out Th7c5h7hTd and Laake’s pair was best. The hand busted an unknown player 64th leaving the remaining 63 in the money. They are now on their first 15-minute break of the day.
