RECAP

The last event of the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Winter Poker Open was a seven-way chop with Paulo Castro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) taking home the final custom guitar trophy.

Casto is declared the winner based on having the chip lead, slightly more than runner-up Denise Tuck.

“It’s good,” said the soft spoken Brazilian, who finished 7th earlier in the series in Event 7 ($250 buy-in) for $1,934. He said a key hand in the tournament when his AQ beat pocket 6s.

“Flopped a boat,” smiled Tuck on her key hand. She held AK on an A-A-K flop, “ace-king was the catalyst to get me this far.”

Gary Lucci, Jared Grey, Justin Dunn, Ray Lambert and Norbert Kara are the other five players who all agreed to an even split of the remaining prize pool money. Each player took home ~$2,800.

The tournament began with 213 entries as the top 27 earned a piece of the $25,560 prize pool.

“It was a long day, I’m tired,” said Grey.

Castro is part of a strong Brazilian contingent that has been playing throughout the series. He’s currently living and working in Miami and Castro said this is one of his best tournament cashes.

Kayala calls herself a “mixologist” at Council Oak Steaks & Seafood where she’s worked for seven years. She makes a dazzling Smoked Old Fashioned that requires lighting a plank of wood on fire, good bourbon, a large ice cube and a twist of orange rum.

Kayla is half Filipino, half Irish. She has a biology degree from the University of South Florida andwants to return to school to become a physicians assistant.

“I love entertaining and throwing parties. I’ve done big blowouts and cozy dinner parties.  Last year I had 60 people in my tiny apartment for Christmas.

“I love cooking and getting people together, seeing friends meet new friends.”

Experience of being a Hard Rock Calendar Girl?

“It really means a lot that I can represent all the good and fun stuff the casino does. I’m super proud.  I get to meet people outside of Council Oak, being with the girls is my favorite part.

“When the centerfold was announced, they were super happy for me and I it was sincere.

“It’s an honor because there are so many beautiful girls that try out and don’t make it.”

Deanna has worked at the casino for less than two years, but this is her second appearance in the calendar.

“Family is everything to me, especially my dad. I’m a huge daddy’s girl.”

Her dad Richard was at the calendar reveal party and she says, “he was more excited than I was, he cried.”

“My dad’s a farmer so I grew up with country. It’s fun and I love to dance.

Six of the final 50 players, more than 10% of the remaining field, are women. That’s a fantastic percentage when you consider that women generally make up less than 5% of the entire tournament field.

With only six tables remaining, three of the six remaining women, Marsha Wolak, Debra Dorcy and Jean Miccio, are on the same table.

“Why don’t you tell him how you got those chips,” says Mike Raimon as he teases Christy Pham who leads the women with nearly 200k. Pham shows no emotion and Raimon quickly adds, “it’s okay we’re friends.”

Tensions are starting to build as we creep toward the final 27 who will get a piece of the prize pool.
