Ken O’Donnell (left) and Karl Manounchakian (right)

It looked like we were in for a long process to get the Event 3 field into the money. The stacks were deep and they were most of the way through Level 17 with no end in sight. Then things happened.

With 36 remaining and 34 getting paid, a short-stacked player was all in for 35,000 and Ken O’Donnell moved all in over the top next to act. Karl Manouchakian woke up with a hand as well and put his stack in the middle as well.

Manouchakian: AsKs
O’Donnell: KhQd
Short Stack: Ah5h

Manouchakian was ahead for the double knockout but both opponents paired the Qc8c5d flop. O’Donnell was ahead and stayed that way after the 2c turn and 7d to nearly triple up while the short stack was eliminated to put the field on the bubble.

But they weren’t done there. At the next table over at the same time, Viral Mehta had another player at risk.

Mehta: AhKd
Opponent: TsTh

It was a flip for the money and Mehta paired his ace immediately on the Ad8c4s flop. The short stack needed a ten but missed the 4h turn and Kc to exit on the bubble.

Tournament staff did a quick headcount and the Event 3 field was in the money like that.
