WPO Day 10: More than $300K Up for Grabs Tomorrow

We have now completed ten days of the 2016 Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Winter Poker Open and Day 11 will award two more guitar trophies.

Today we ran the last two flights of the $570 buy-in/$200,000 Guarantee Event 7 and they surpassed the guarantee early in the day. It was gone before the first hour was through and they ran it up over $300,000 before the final flight closed registration.

All told, Event 7 drew 624 entrants to create a prize pool worth $310,350 with the winner set to take home nearly $75,000 along with the guitar trophy and a seat in the WPO Championship.

Tampa regular Onder Ekinci went from short stack to chip leader during the last level in the early flight to bag the biggest stack in Flight E while Seminole Hard Rock Player of the Year David Prociak (pictured) was the big bag in Flight C.

Other big names returning tomorrow for Day 2 are John Dolan, Rafael Reis, John Holley, David Tuthill, John Christian Templeton, Carlos Loving, and Seminole Hard Rock Tampa ambassador Wally Maddah.

Event 7 has 113 players returning for Day 2 on Sunday at noon with 63 players making the money.

For those who didn’t make Day 2 or bust out early from Event 7, we have a $150 buy-in No Limit Hold’em Turbo event kicking off at 2pm with a $15,000 guaranteed prize pool. It will move along at a brisk pace and award another guitar trophy along with a $1,650 WPO Championship seat.

Sunday will be a busy day in the poker room with some big money on the line.

Tampa, Fla. (December 9, 2015) – The second weekend of the 2015 Winter Poker Open brought out another Turbo crowd on a Sunday afternoon. The second such event on the schedule drew a nice crowd of 202 entrants and it was local favorite John Pappas taking home the title along with a $1,650 Winter Poker Open Championship seat.

This week’s field topped the 199 entrants from Event 3 but they played down just as fast. Less than half the field remained when registration closed at the start of Level 13 and they were facing the money bubble not longer after.

Seminole Hard Rock Tampa ambassador Wally Maddah did the heavy lifting to get the last 27 players in the money and he was joined by local regular Cheri Beatty, social media superstar Kevin “Kevmath” Mathers, and John “Call Me Johnny” Pappas.

After a short break, they played down to the final table in short time and it was wrapped up within the hour. Kostas Papstavrov, Mike Drawdy, and James D’Arcangelis went out in the first few hands followed by Agnes Barton and Beatty, two of the three women at the final table.

After Chad Policarpio’s knockout in 5th place, the last four players negotiated a deal to evenly divide the remaining prize pool and Pappas picked up the title as the chip leader. He earned the honor along with a seat in the $1,650 Winter Poker Open Championship.

“I was already going to play,” Pappas quipped. “Now I already have my seat.”

The wins puts the Brooklyn-born amateur’s career earnings a little further over $100,000. The win is his third cash during the 2015 Winter Poker Open and second final table after a 5th place finish in Event 4.

Event 8 Results:

Event 8: Chad Policarpio – 5th Place ($1,355)

$150 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em Turbo (Re-Entry)
Level 26: 40,000/80,000/10,000 Ante

Chad Policarpio (Orlando, FL)
Chad Policarpio (Orlando, FL)

There was barely a pause between big hands and Chad Policarpio was the next to try for a double up, but his fate was the same as the others before.

His final hand saw Josh Fulford open to 200,000 from the small blind and Policarpio moved all-in from the big blind with AdJh. Fulford called with the superior AcKh and the ThTd3h6d9c board ran clean to give Fulford the pot. Policarpio had a nice run but had to settle for 5th place money.

Event 8: Cheri Beatty – 6th Place ($1,130)

$150 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em Turbo (Re-Entry)
Level 25: 30,000/60,000/10,000 Ante

Cheri Beatty (Tampa, FL)
Cheri Beatty (Tampa, FL)

Cheri Beatty made a few moves at the final table with none of her shoves getting called. She took another shot and this time Josh Fulford looked her up with AhTc.

Beatty tabled 8h8s and asked for an Eight to take the race pressure off. Instead of help, she saw Fulford add gutshot outs on the KsJd5s flop and get there on the Qh turn to leave her drawing dead to 6th pace and the first four-digit payout of the Turbo.

Event 8: Agnes Barton – 7th Place ($904)

$150 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em Turbo (Re-Entry)
Level 23: 25,000/50,000/5,000 Ante

Agnes Barton
Agnes Barton

The tournament ended for Agnes Barton in two big hands. The first happened against Stephen Davidson when her AsQd was beaten by JsTh on the Ks8c7h3c9s board to leave her with just 30,000. Enough for her next ante and small blind.

She managed one double up but was gone two hands later when Chad Policarpio knocked her out with Jh5h over 8c6c.
