Event 2
$20,000 Guaranteed
$250 Turbo No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Entries: 160
Prize Pool: $32,500
June 10, 2018

Jose Amezquita

Most players wanted to take part in the big Event 1 restart going in the other part of the poker room but some took their shot at a one-day trophy event in its place. The first turbo tournament on the 2018 WPTDeepStacks Tampa schedule played quickly and Jose Amezquita walked away with the top prize after the last four players agreed to a deal.

The $250 buy-in Turbo Event 3 had a $20,000 guaranteed prize pool that was bested by the 160 entries who took part in the game. It was a mix of players coming in just for this tournament and those who busted early from Event 1. They created a prize pool worth $32,500 with the last 20 spots being paid.

They had a short dinner break and the money bubble burst shortly after their return. Ten eliminations later and they were at the final table where Julio Marerro-Sosa held a huge chip lead. He could not hold onto to all his chips and he was sitting in second position when they hit four-handed play.

Amezquita had taken the lead at that point and the four remaining players worked out a deal to chop up on the remaining prize pool. With the biggest stack, he earned the win and the guitar trophy along with $5,748 for the efforts.

The turbo event was a great way to make some money and earn some honors all in one day. We have another one running next Sunday to close out the series and it should be another fun tournament.

Charles Davis Scores $9,007 and Guitar Trophy in Outright PLO Victory

Below is the final report from Event 2 of the Winter Poker Open which concluded just before 2am Saturday

2017 Winter Poker Open
Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
Tampa, Florida
Event 2
$250 Pot Limit Omaha Re-Entry
Entries: 143
Prize Pool: $30,030
December 8, 2017

Winner Name: Charles Davis
Age: 50
Hometown: Tampa, Florida
Occupation: Self employed
Birthplace: St. Louis, Missouri

Tampa, Florida — Charles Davis defeated 143 entries in Event 2 of the Winter Poker Open during the early morning hours of Saturday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The $250 Pot Limit Omaha Re-Entry saw a notable year-over-year attendance increase of more than 33 percent and Davis was rewarded with $9,007 and a guitar trophy for his outright win.

The event’s $20,000 guarantee was easily surpassed as a kiddie worth $30,030 was generated by the time registration closed. Davis came out on top of a tough field that included Seminole Hard Rock Tampa poker ambassador Wally Maddah, past WPO Main Event champion A.J. Kelsall and traveling pro John Holley. With 18 players left, Davis played a monster pot against Jeffrey Higgins. Both flopped a set — Higgins jacks and Davis nines — but David also had a pair of queens in his hand. A queen on the turn gave him a better set and he busted Higgins while raking in a pot worth nearly 800,000. Holding better than a third of the chips in play with 17 players left, Davis cruised to the final table and eventually to the winner’s circle.

Davis is 50 years old and resides right here in Tampa. Primarily a cash game player, he says this marked his first tournament and was in fact his first recorded cash.

Final results:

1st: Charles Davis – $9,007 + Guitar Trophy
2nd: Sean Hampson – $4,955
3rd: Ryan Carter – $2,853
4th: Mehdi Belhassan – $2,402

Charles Davis

Sean Hampson limped the button and Charles Davis raised the big blind. It was back on Hampson and he potted to 108,000. Davis called and the pair saw a flop of Qd8s7d. Davis lead for pot — 216,000. Hampson re-potted for a total of 864,000. Davis announced “call” and there was a little confusion as the pair thought he was all-in. In fact, Davis had a few chips left.

The turn was the 5d and Davis completed the formality by open-shoving for his last roughly 50,000. Hampson called.

Davis spiked two pair to take the lead from Hampson and win the pot. Hampson was left with less than 10,000 chips and busted in second place the very next hand.
