WPO Day 17: Big Championship Day

There’s only one day remaining on the 2016 Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Winter Poker Open schedule and today we let fly with the final flight of the Championship. Flight C blasted another 235 entries into the tournament to push the $300,000 guaranteed prize pool well over $700,000.

We saw a lot of new faces come in during the afternoon including Lily Kiletto, Seminole Hard Rock Poker team member Jessica Dawley, and 2014 WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open champ James Calderaro.

Event 7 final table member Joey Alegria (pictured above) returned from dinner with the chip lead and only temporarily gave it up to Mark Chapman. He put away 378,500 for Day 2 and will begin Day 2 with the chip lead.

Only 110 of the starting 489 entries are still alive with a chance at the title and 45 of them will earn a piece of the prize pool tomorrow. The top two players will each take home a six-digit payout with the winner earning more than $187,000 plus a seat in the 2017 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Championship.

Championship: Done for the Day

Play has come to an end for the final flight of the WPO Championship with 57 players surviving to return tomorrow. Joey Alegria came back from dinner with the chip lead and continued to build it up. He put away 378,500 into his bag which is good enough for the Day 2 returning lead.

Other players moving on were Seminole Hard Rock Poker team members Jessica Dawley and Matt Stout, James Calderaro, Cheri Beaty, Mark Chapman, Brett Bader and Seminole Hard Rock Tampa ambassador Wally Maddah.

They will join the 56 players who made it through the first two flights for Day 2 at noon. They’ll play down into the money, the final table, and the new WPO Champion.

Full Day 2 chip counts and seat assignments will be posted as soon as they are available.

Championship: Almost Through

Players are moving through the final level of the night and the pace is deliberate. Seminole Hard Rock Poker team member Matt Stout has been riding the short stack all night but he did find a small double. He’ll need a little more to contend but he has a good lineup.

The chip lead is bouncing back and forth between Mark Chapman and John Alegria. Each is well over 300,000 and in good position to return tomorrow with the lead.

Championship: David Jackson Eliminated

Pro David Jackson is one good score away from pushing his career earnings over $1 million but he’ll have to wait another day.

He was short stacked since the dinner break and moved all-in for his final 31,000. The player to his left moved all-in over the top to get folds from the rest of the table.

“You have ace-king?” Jackson asked him.

“Nope.”

Jackson was in trouble with against and it really got bad on the flop. The turn left him drawing dead in the Championship.

Jackson has tournament wins around the country but he’s still waiting for his first SHRP title despite several close calls.

Flight C players are on their final break of the day with less than nine tables remaining and we should see it drop quickly over the last two levels.

Antuan Bunkley has been quietly grinding in the back of the room where no one can see as he pushed his stack up near 200,000. A nice number but not quite the insane, massive 616,000 bag he put together last year at the end of his starting Championship flight.

Cheri Beatty continues to improve and now sits with over 100,000 after eliminating a player. She bet the entire way down until the board read and her opponent raised all-in. Beatty quickly called with and his was no good.

There are still ten tables in action with two hours left in the day. We would expect the field to be shorter but they are more cautious with no other options to re-enter if their move fails them.

John Alegria looks like he extended his lead and is on pace at the moment to surpass the 339,000 bagged up by Matthew Leechy in Flight A. Seminole Hard Rock Tampa ambassador is having a much better day today and sits with 163,000 in Level 12.

Also still around are David Jackson, David Tuthill, Cheri Beatty, Lily Kiletto, and Tony March along with Seminole Hard Rock Poker team members Jessica Dawley and Matt Stout.

Tampa regular Cheri Beatty watched her stack make drastic moves in both directions since the dinner break. She returned with 60 big blinds but ran into a cooler soon after.

Beatty dropped down to six big blinds when her was no good against then she ran it back up to 60,000 when kings of her own (and a successful double with big slick) held. She’s also stuck dealing with Seminole Hard Rock team member Matt Stout on her right, so it won’t be boring or quiet.

The official numbers were released and the 2016 Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Winter Poker Open Championship drew 489 entries to create a prize pool worth $733,500. The last 45 players will earn a piece of the money with a min-cash taking home $3,668. The top two spots will each walk away with a six-digit score with the next WPO Champion earning $187,401 plus the added $5,250 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Championship seat.
