(Tampa, Florida) – It was during the early morning hours of Saturday, December 8 when Tampa’s own Eugenio Alvarez won Event 2 of the Winter Poker Open, a $250 buy-in pot limit Omaha re-entry tournament with a $20,000 guarantee.

Wrapping up just after 3am local time, the event took more than 13 hours to complete and it didn’t find a conclusion until Alvarez, Jeremiah Minaya and Alexandru Ivan agreed to an even chop three-handed. As chip leader, Alvarez earned $4,561 and the trophy while Minaya and Ivan claimed $4,560 apiece and went down second and third respectively.

The $250 PLO event kicked off Friday at 2pm alongside Flight C and D of the big $570 buy-in opener. It drew 102 entries generating a total prize pool worth $21,420.  Alvarez earned the lion’s share of the kiddie which was spread out among the final 11 participants.

A number of notables took part in the event including Tampa regulars Wally Maddah and Manny Minaya as well as defending champion Charles Davis. No member of this trio made their way into the money, though.

Alvarez is quite comfortable in the Tampa poker room owning a number of cashes throughout 2017. From April to December of that year he finishes in the money four times including three final table appearances and nearly $13,000 in earnings.

The PLO trophy win marks Alvarez’s largest career score and first tournament victory.
