Not only is the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Summer Poker Open Championship Event (June 12-18) right around the corner, but it’s championship time in the NBA & NHL.
Wally Naghtin is supporting the New York Rangers, who are currently tied at 2 in their opening game of the Stanley Cup Finals with the LA Kings.
The NBA Finals tip off tomorrow night with John Liu (Jacksonville, FL) representing the Heat in the Miami vs San Antonio rematch.
And things are also tied up in tonight’s MLB game between the Yankees and A’s.
Marc Kocsis (Tampa) and Jerome Hall (Jacksonville) are keeping an eye on the game, which is tied at 4 after six innings, while keeping an eye on each others blinds.
But unlike poker, there will be no chopped pots in any of these games.
Players are back from their break and back in action. 214 are registered so far, with late registration and re-entry available until the start of level 9.
Big stacks as of the break:
Constantinos Liapis 48,525 Joshua Thornton 44,050 Stefan Byrd 41,600
Level 15: Blinds 2k/4k/500 ante (27 minutes remaining)
When the clock stopped, the final 33 remaining players bagged their chips for the night. The two biggest stacks were very close and it came down to less than one ante.
Jermaine Phang bagged 204,400 to beat out Norbert Kara, who bagged 204,000 — just 400 less.
Jermaine has earned an $1,100 seat in Event 9, the $75,000 Guaranteed event that begins Sunday, June 8th.
His count puts him 5th overall among players already advancing to Day 2. Through the first five flights, there have been 848 entries and 99 have made it to Day 2.
Just three more minutes to play and the survivors will bag their chips for the night.
Filipp Khavin has already won Event 2, finished 3rd in Event 4, and now he’s making a deep run here in Event 3.
Before the blinds went up, he got all-in holding J9 against a player with AK. The board came 8 7 4 J J and he make trips to take the pot, doubling up to ~95k.
Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Summer Poker Open Event 6: $300 Omaha H/L (Re-Entry) June 3-4, 2014
Entries: 69 Total Buy-In: $20,700
RECAP Primarily a No Limit cash game player, poker pro Bryan Scofield (Tampa, FL) used his love for Omaha to best the field in Event 6 of the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Summer Poker Open.
“It’s probably my favorite game to play,” said Scofield who held a commanding chip lead three-handed on his way to the title and the $6,035 first prize. “I tried it to break up the monotony of hold’em and was hooked.”
Scofield had 700 of the 800+ chips in play on the penultimate hand of the tournament with Steve Allen (Bradenton, FL) and Patrick Cummins (Tampa, FL).
Scofield and Allen chopped Cummins chips who was eliminated in third place. Schofield then defeated Allen heads up on the ensuing hand.
“You have to have chips,” said Allen who finished runner-up for $2,070. “He’s a good player,” Allen said of Scofield, “but you have to have chips.”
“They were getting short and I could raise every hand,” said the 39-year-old Scofield. “Basically I was playing my stack and putting pressure on them.”
The tournament began with 69 entries that created a total buy-in of $20,700. The field reached the money on Day 1 with John Buzbee (8th) and Harry Wilks (9th) eliminated before the end of night bag and tag.
The final 7 players returned for Day 2 with Cris Tuchbaum the extreme short stack (11k) who was eliminated in 7th place.
Jarek Poniatowski was next to go (6th), followed by Ryan Arkin and Peter Dragar. Scofield and Dragar split the pot to eliminate Arkin (5th), while Scofield knocked out Dragar (4th) to build the commanding lead.
“It was a really good table,” said Scofield who held on the final hand that he won with a Ten-high straight, “the all played really well.”
In addition to the money and guitar trophy, Scofield earned a $3,500 entry into the Summer Poker Open Championship Event (June 12-18).

Steve Allen is down 7 to 1 in chips against Bryan Scofield when they play their only hand heads up.
Allen is all in for less than 2 big bets and doesn’t connect with the board. Scofield takes the hand with a Ten-high straight to win the tournament.
“I played okay, it was a good tournament,” says Allen, who earns $3,278 as runner-up. “You have to have chips,” he says knowing he needed to double-up.
Allen is a flooring contractor who’s originally from London, England and nicknamed “English.”
