E.J. McVetty, Event 6 Champion

Three Winter Poker Open trophies were awarded on Day 7 with the third coming in the wee hours of the Thursday morning. Event 6 began at 6pm on Wednesday and nearly 11 hours later it was E.J. McVetty taking top honors.

The evening tournament drew exactly 90 entries into the $250 Big Stack No Limit Hold’em event to create a prize pool of $17,250. Clear past the $15,000 guarantee and the last nine players earned a piece.

The tournament moved along at a nice clip thanks to the 25-minute blinds but the big starting stacks gave them a lot of room to make moves. It took them more than eight hours to work their way down towards the final table where Michael DeMahy brought a huge chip lead.

They felt each other out for an hour before the floodgates opened with eliminations. McVetty almost became one of them when he lost a huge pot to Roseli Godbey to leave him with crumbs and seven player remaining. He ran his few big blinds back, mostly thanks to a timely two outer against Michael DeMahy, and he ran over the table once he took the lead.

Godbey laddered up her short stack to third place when she was sent to the payout desk. McVetty and DeMahy worked out a deal to evenly divide the remaining prize pool leaving the $1,650 WPO Championship to McVetty and his big chip lead.
