Players in Day 1A of the $1,650 buy-in Winter Poker Open Main Event are on a 40-minute break. Cards go back in the air at roughly 6:20pm and registration will close at that time.

At present, Joseph Rivers is best of the six tables worth of players that are still in. He sits on 212,500 chips to top the field at this juncture.

The clock shows 113 registered to this point and that number should tick up a few between now and the 6:15pm registration close.

Past Winter Poker Open Main Event champion Andrew Kelsall and last year’s Player of the Year runner-up Michael Cohen are in the Main Event game here in Tampa. They find themselves seated next to one another at a tough table that includes big stack Joseph Rivers.

Back in 2014, Kelsall beat 297 entries to earn $124,731. Cohen is no stranger to Main Event success, either, having finished runner-up in the WPTDeepStacks Tampa headliner the past two years running.

Three more levels and another 15-minute break are in the books and action’s back going here in Day 1A of the Winter Poker Open Main Event. Dan Sepiol put a hurt on Table 8 over the last two hours and he retains his chip lead to start Level 7.

While Sepiol sits at right about 160,000, he’s not along in six-figure territory. Joseph Rivers and Ofer Peleg are also over 100,000 and appear to sit second and third in the counts.

Ido Ashkenazi

The Winter Poker Open Main Event has become a staple on the tournament calendar. While it was always notable, last year’s massive 671 entries and $1,006,500 prize pool cemented its spot in the major poker rotation. As such, it attracts players from all over the country.

Two travelers with the luxury of not having to go very far to play for seven figures are Hollywood regulars Ido Ashkenazoi and Ory Hen. The pair got in the action early and both are still in as Level 6 is about to expire.

As the event works its way through the starting flights we expect more and more travelers to appear in search of a big Florida score.

Registration and re-entry each day will be open until about 6:15pm. Those unable to make it for today’s installment are encouraged to play tomorrow’s 11am Day 1B or Saturday’s 11am Day 1C.

Reigning Seminole Hard Rock Poker Player of the Year Brett Bader

Like Event 1 winner Aaron Speer, Brett Bader scored a free entry into this $1,650 Winter Poker Open Main Event. No slight to Speer, Bader did it the hard way with a year’s worth of solid play, deep runs and big scores in Seminole championships. After the dust settled on the 2017/2018 season, Bader was anointed the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Player of the Year earning entry in all championships slated for the following season.

That season is underway now and Bader is in this midst of his third stop on the POY tour. He previously redeemed entries in the September Coconut Creek WSOP Circuit and last month’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open in Hollywood, but came up short of a score. He hopes to kickstart his POY tenure here in Tampa.

Aaron Speer

Aaron Speer is rested and back after a long Sunday that stretched into the early morning hours of Monday. In the end it proved worth it as Speer claimed victory in the Winter Poker Open $570 earning $62,008 following a four-way chop. On top of the sizable score, Speer earned the property’s signature trophy and a seat in this $1,650 Main Event.

He’s exercising that free entry now and is taking part in the growing turnout here in Day 1A. The clock shows 80 entries toward the end of Level 3.

Level 1 expired to Level 2 and the field has continued to grow in the first 40 minutes of play. After kicking off with 39 entries, the clock now shows 60 having ponied up $1,650 in one form or another.

The tables are littered with Tampa regulars, traveling pros and even a number of players from our friends that spend most of their time at the Hollywood property. We’ll take a look at a few of the notable storylines shortly.
