The afternoon hours are here and more players are getting in the game. We have 60 in the game to push the prize pool two-thirds of the way to the $200,000 Guarantee with this session and three fresh flights to push it higher.

Tampa favorite John Pappas was one of the recent players joining and he wouldn’t mind adding another trophy to his case. He picked up his sole tournament victory here during the 2015 Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Winter Poker Open in the Big Stack Turbo event. Pappas earned the biggest cash of his career last summer in Las Vegas during the Deepstack Extravaganza for more than $20,000.

The entry count doubled itself up over the first level as players get moving and make their way to the poker room. There’s still a few minutes before it’s no longer considered “morning” and nearly four hours left to register.

Anthony Astarita took his seat midway through Level 1 even though he already has a seat on Day 2. The 2016 WTPDeepStack Tampa Main Event winner survived Flight A yesterday but he’s not content with the 27,000 he put in his bag. Astarita hopes to take advantage of the “best stack forward” format to run up a bigger count for Sunday and remove his smaller bag from play.

Day 1 of the WPTDeepStacks series was a success and we should see even more players take their shot at the opening event today. The first two flights combined to put 206 entries in the game getting the tournament more than halfway to the $200,000 Guarantee with four flights to go.

There were 40 players still around at the end of their flights and more will join them in the Day 2 field today.

The $570 buy-in tournament gives each entrant a 20,000 starting stack and first day levels last 30 minutes. Late registration and unlimited re-entries are available until the start of Level 9 around 3:30pm and they will play out 14 full levels. Those with chips at the time will return on Sunday at noon to play down to a champion.
