Tampa, Florida
Event 1
$570 Deep Stack Re-Entry
Entries: 892
Prize Pool: $446,000
December 7-10, 2017

Tampa, Florida — Gil Aboodi came out on top in a marathon event Sunday at the Winter Poker Open in Tampa. As Day 2 in the $570 Deep Stack stretched closer to the 15-hour mark, the final four players in the big, 892-entry tournament agreed to an ICM deal. With blinds of 100,000/200,000, the average stack dipped below 23 big blinds before the quartet of Aboodi, Cedric Tercy, Mark “Bud” Wiser and Quyen Hoang surrendered and found an agreement. As chip leader, Aboodi took the lion’s share of the prize pool — $71,890 — along with the guitar trophy.

Rough chip counts and ICM payouts:

Gil Aboodi – 7,775,000 – 1st for $71,890 + Guitar Trophy
Cedric Tercy – 6,500,000 – 2nd for $67,099
Mark “Bud” Wiser – 2,600,000 – 3rd for $48,350
Quyen Hoang – 1,300,000 – 4th for $41,685

The WPO kickoff event boasted six starting flights — two daily Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The 892-entry field generated a prize pool that easily surpassed the $300,000 guarantee before leveling out at $446,000. Additionally, it marked a year-over-year attendance increase of better than 42 percent.

Flight-by-Flight Breakdown:

Flight A: 174 Entries, 35 Advanced
Flight B: 127 Entries, 24 Advanced
Flight C: 113 Entries, 26 Advanced
Flight D: 111 Entries, 22 Advanced
Flight E: 216 Entries, 43 Advanced
Flight F: 151 Entries, 27 Advanced
Total: 892 Entries, 177 Advanced

Top pros John Dolan and John Racener got in the game as well as a slew of Tampa regulars like ambassador Wally Maddah, Karl Manouchakian and Anthony Astarita. Of these, Dolan, Manouchakian and Racener cashed finishing 35th, 51st and 56th respectively.

Following the win, Aboodi is a two-time tournament champion with more than $185,000 in reported earnings. While the WPO score is a good prize, it’s not the largest win of his career. Just three months ago he finished second in a World Series of Poker Circuit $580 at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood for better than $83,000.

The $570 re-entry was recognized as Event 1 of the WPO. The 12-day series boasts six primary events headlined by a $1,650 buy-in, $500,000 guaranteed Main Event. Having flirted with the $750,000 mark last year, big things are expected from the finale which kicks off Thursday with the first of three starting flights.
